GLASS ART

As a glass artist I try to push beyond what I currently know or am able to do. I like testing the boundaries of the science and techniques of my medium. Imagining something in three dimensions, designing it in my mind or in one or two dimensions and then figuring out how to bring it to life.

As a young person I intuitively knew about the potential of compositional forces. Studying light, color, and values gave me a deeper formal understanding. Then I started noticing the spaces as much as the materials I was working and saw quiet everywhere, in life and art.

Much of my glass work is currently focused on the unfilled spaces, the lacunae.

Lacunae are sometimes associated with extended periods of silence in music or blank spaces in the written word. This silence or space is like negative sound in contrast to the heard tones or words. Though no notes are played or words printed, a lacuna is a purposeful passage in the context of the overall work. The spaces in my glass art are like dedicated silences.

GLASS PROCESS

The type of glass technique I use is called kiln-forming or warm glass. Using a kiln to heat glass or glass pieces into objects is an ancient method dating back to 2000 BCE.  In this process, a piece is designed using a variety of approaches common to all art, including cutting and shaping various types, sizes, and colors of glass, application of other metallic, glass or enamel-based substances to the glass surfaces, and composing the piece taking into account the layers and desired outcome.

Then using an electric kiln, I fire my work under carefully controlled circumstances, up to temperatures of 1800 degrees, over a period of 24 or more hours. Sometimes up to five firings may be required to achieve the appearance and form I am after. Other processes may also be employed along the way, including grinding and sanding with diamond tools, and adding more glass.

I use nothing but the highest quality raw materials, including professional art glass and glass products developed for the art and architecture community, as well as glass products I make myself.
